Balzer Theater at Herron's (Photographed July 9, 2020)

When I first started working on #darkhousesatlanta, I wasn’t sure whether or not it was a viable idea. I thought perhaps some might think it was a negative to see their theaters empty and without the magic of thespians on their stages. After experimenting with two stages at my alma mater, Georgia Tech, I approached Gretchen Butler, Managing Director at Theatrical Outfit. Her response was an enthusiastic “YES” and the project began to gather steam.

Traditionally, theaters are dark on Mondays—as tradition has it, to give the ghosts a night to play—and the ghost lights burn all night. We never see them, because, well, we’re home tucked in our beds as they scream “Double double toil and trouble/Fire burn and cauldron bubble” through the night.

Perhaps it’s also a good night to give the actors a rest after weekend performances. One of the coolest ghost lights in town is at TO. I guess it’s to be expected with so much creativity—in the house where they “Tell stories that stir the soul!”
