Conant Performing Arts Center (Photographed August 3, 2020)

This is the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. As much as I loved summer evenings of Shakespeare and with the walls opened up, the new Conant (I say new, but it was built in 1996) is a truly wonderful performing space!

We take for granted the richness of the science and culture work done in Atlanta. We have two medical schools, three REALLY strong hospital systems, and a cooperative bio-technology program unsurpassed in the world. Oh, and we’re home to the CDC.

Tyler Perry just became a billionaire. Movie and TV production is picking back up. Theatre is trying new, safe methods of playing while protecting its patrons.

At the heart of professional theatre in Atlanta are strong performing arts programs in our universities: Oglethorpe, Georgia Tech, GSU, Emory, Spelman, Morehouse, Agnes Scott and MANY more.

And the students are directed by strong Artistic and Technical Directors—most of whom are also professionals working in/with Atlanta’s professional theatres.

These stages are vital to Atlanta’s culture. Let’s keep them that way.
