Jennie T. Anderson Theatre (Photographed July 20, 2020)

It has been a very long time since I was last in or at the Cobb Civic Center. So long that I had no idea that there was an incredibly beautiful 606-seat theater built in the same complex. The Jennie T. Anderson Theatre is a true hidden gem. It is home to the Atlanta Lyric Theatre and The Georgia Ballet, and busy throughout the year, but seeing it dark on Monday wasn’t that unusual—most theaters are dark on Mondays, in order to give everyone a day off and time for the ghosts to play—until you learn that like all the other houses in Atlanta, it has been dark since around the middle of March.

Even though lights may be on in some theaters, they are still dark—no one is playing. Performers, stagehands and craftspeople are not working and no longer getting any help from the State or Federal governments. Many are helping feed each other or hire each other to cut the grass via the Atlanta Artist Relief Fund, or reading stories to each other’s kids. They may look bigger than life on the stage, but they have real lives like rest of us.
